This collection contains personal materials relating to friars after they have left the order, passed away, or transferred to another province. Each friar's file contents are mostly contain to their novitiate records, canonical assignments, historically important correspondence, and a small number of personal items if desired upon their passing. Within the broader collection, each Friar is sorted as a series.

Friars with particuarly substantial historically important papers or items outside of the scope of the Personal Files Collection are moved to a dedicated collection under their name.

Order Obituary

Brother Ignatius Schranz, O.P. was born in Kansas City on January 19, 1928; professed on March 2, 1951. He first served the province in the House of Studies, River Forest, then in the Priory of St. Rose, Dubuque, then in St. Anthony Priory in New Orleans, and finally in our community in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was sacristan for the St. Thomas Aquinas parish chapel, used by the students of the University of New Mexico. Unfortunately, to the consternation of all, he was killed, on April 10, 1959.

Non-Order Obituary

Brother Ignatius Schranz, 31, formerly of Kansas City, was killed yesterday in an accident at Albuquerque N.M. Frank Schranz, 2628 College, his father, said he understood that his son died when a gun he had meant to clean discharged accidentally. Brother Ignatius was born in Kansas City, and lived here until entering the Dominican order as a lay brother in 1949. He was solemnly professed in the order in 1957. He had been stationed in River Forest, IL, Dubuque, IA, New Orleas, LA, and Oak Park, IL, previous to being sent to the Newman Center at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Theresa Schranz, and the paternal grandmother Mrs. Julia Schranz, both the of home; a brother, Edward Schranz, 4228 Michigan, and a sister Miss Virginia Schranz, 2607 Cherry. The rosary will be said at 8 o'clock Sunday at the Mellody-McGilley-Eylar chapel, Linwood and Woodland. Services will be at 9 o'clock Monday at the Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in Winona, MN. The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions to the Dominican order.
