This collection contains personal materials relating to friars after they have left the order, passed away, or transferred to another province. Each friar's file contents are mostly contain to their novitiate records, canonical assignments, historically important correspondence, and a small number of personal items if desired upon their passing. Within the broader collection, each Friar is sorted as a series.

Friars with particuarly substantial historically important papers or items outside of the scope of the Personal Files Collection are moved to a dedicated collection under their name.

This collection is a work in progress and any use of these files requires the explicit permission of the Provincial. Contact the Archivist to discuss access or inquire about friars that may not been cataloged yet.

Obiturary

Fr. Jim Barnett, O.P., entered eternal life on October 4, 2019 in Chicago, IL. He was born in Sioux Falls, SD on December 5, 1938. He entered the Dominican Order in 1958 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1965. He was assigned to campus ministry posts in New Mexico and Texas and other social justice ministries from 1966-1973. In 1974, he came to Denver to be the retreat director of the regional and national Marriage Encounter. From 1979-1984 he was the Novice Master as well as being involved at St. Dominic Parish, Denver.

After his years as Novice Master he entered into a ministry that would shape the rest of his life, he became a missioner in El Salvador in the midst of that country’s tumultuous, violent civil war. With friends in Denver he founded Project Salvador in 1985 which continues today to support organizations and projects to benefit the poor and marginalized individuals and communities.

Project Salvador, his Dominican brothers, and his friends in Denver will celebrate his life at a memorial Mass, Friday, November 22, 2019 at 7:00pm, St. Dominic Church, 29th and Federal. A reception will follow at the parish.
