Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Associated Social Justice Organization Records document the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great’s involvement with and support of various affiliated partner organizations engaged in social justice, peace, and community development initiatives from the early 1970s through the early twenty-first century. These organizations operated independently of the Province but maintained formal or informal relationships through shared membership, staffing, governance participation, financial support, or collaborative programming.

The collection consists of records created or accumulated by the Province in the course of its association with these organizations. Materials reflect the Province’s role as a founding member, sponsor, collaborator, or institutional participant rather than as the primary governing authority. As such, the collection documents institutional relationships and engagement rather than the complete administrative records of the organizations themselves.

The collection is arranged into series by organization. Records relating to smaller or short-lived associations are limited in scope, while more substantial documentation exists for the 8th Day Center of Justice, which had a long-term relationships with the Province.

A small amount of material describe the Sheil School of Social Services and document early collaborations in social service education and outreach. Records of the Black Dominicans Conference reflect participation in initiatives addressing racial justice and the experience of Black Catholics within the Dominican context. The Inter-Community Social Justice Network files document regional cooperation among religious communities engaged in justice advocacy during the late 1980s. Records concerning the San Jose Obrero Mission illustrate involvement in ministry and justice work focused on immigrant and labor communities in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago.

The largest body of material relates to the 8th Day Center for Justice, an organization in which the Province played a foundational and sustained role over several decades. These records include board minutes, internal administrative documents, correspondence, financial and program files, and publications. Together, they document the Province’s long-term commitment to the Center’s mission of justice education, advocacy, and community engagement.

The collection is arranged into five series by organization. The 8th Day Center for Justice series is further divided into subseries to reflect the administrative and publication materials. The records span approximately 1973 to 2005.
