Abstract

This collection covers the different houses and locations served by friars within the Province. Each house or priory is listed under their location, while areas that they worked with through missions or stations are also listed but connected to their house of residence.

All materials pertaining to the “defining ministry”, including the assignment of personnel to the ministry (e.g., pastor, assistant pastor), are placed under this heading. See arrangement for Files.

In this collection a “house” is understood in the sense defined by the Constitutions of the Order in the appropriate time period – 1932-1968 or 1968->. “Houses” are arranged alphabetically by the city in which they are located, each city constituting a distinct Subgroup. Within a Subgroup each foundation constitutes a distinct Series. Each Series is designated by letters in alphabetical order as needed.

The Friar in charge of the “defining ministry” (e.g., pastor, director) may also be the religious superior and may have responsibility for Friars not associated with the defining ministry of a place. Materials relating to the ministry of these Friars is generally placed in the Record Group PA [Province-Apostolates].

When a number of Friars live in a house which has a “defining ministry” (e.g., St. Vincent Ferrer Priory exists because of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish), but are not engaged in the “defining ministry”, materials pertaining to their work are placed under the Record Group PA [Province-Apostolates].

When a house has no defining ministry and is composed of several Friars doing a variety of apostolic work, only the materials pertaining to the religious community are placed in the Record Group PH [Province-Houses]. Materials pertaining to the particular apostolates of the Friars are placed under the Record Group PA [Province-Apostolates].
