Biographical / Historical

The Dominican Order, formally the Order of Preachers (O.P.), was founded by St. Dominic de Guzmán in 1216 with a mission of preaching, theological scholarship, and ministry. The Order includes several branches: friars (priests and brothers) who engage in preaching and pastoral ministry, apostolic sisters involved in education and social work, contemplative nuns dedicated to prayer and penance, and lay Dominicans who live in the secular world while sharing in the Order's spiritual mission. The Priests' Fraternities of St. Dominic is an association for diocesan priests who, while not taking religious vows, commit to living according to Dominican spirituality and support the Order's mission through prayer and study.
