Angelic Warfare Confraternity Collection

 Collection
Identifier: PG 0423.02A

Scope and Contents

This collection documents the history, administration, and devotional life of the Angelic Warfare Confraternity within the Province of St. Albert the Great from 1937–2012. The Angelic Warfare Confraternity is a spiritual fellowship within the Catholic Church dedicated to promoting chastity and purity through prayer, sacramental devotion, and community, especially under the patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas.

The collection includes materials generated by the Directors of Confraternities from 1978 to 2012, as well as by local promoters and member communities. These materials consist of correspondence, canonical forms, devotional handouts, prayer cards, promotional brochures, and other religious literature for members. Administrative records reflect the governance, development, and outreach efforts of the Confraternity across the province.

A substantial component of the collection is the member registries, which document individual enrollments in the Confraternity at various Dominican priories, including St. Thomas Aquinas Priory (River Forest, IL), St. Rose Priory (Dubuque, IA), and others. These records span from 1937 through 1965 and provide listings of lay and clerical members, often including dates of enrollment.

Materials are primarily textual, including correspondence, printed forms, devotional booklets, and handwritten registers. The materials are housed in two boxes.

Biographical / Historical

The Angelic Warfare Confraternity was officially established by Pope Benedict XIII in 1727, and put under the direction of the Master General of the Order of Preachers. Its members dedicate themselves to living and promoting the virtue of chastity in the world. To become a member, one must be enrolled in an official register kept by the Order. Such registers are generally connected with Dominican houses, or houses which keep a register for a given region.

The Angelic Warfare Confraternity has continued within the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great since its inception. The leader of the each confraternity was called the Director from 1939 to 1978. From 1978 to 2012, there was an overall Director of Confraternities that oversall all confraternities within the Province. From 2012 to the present, the position name was changed to Promoter and each confratenity was assigned to an individual friar.
