Confraternity of the Most Holy Name of Jesus Collection
Scope and Contents
The Confraternity of the Most Holy Name of Jesus Collection contains printed materials, correspondence, devotional materials, and member enrollment records associated with the Holy Name Society within the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great from 1944 to 1984. The materials span from the 1940s through the 1980s and are arranged in two series: Director (1939–1978), Enrollment Records.
The Director (1939–1978) series includes general correspondence files, newsletters (1980), and specific correspondence with Mr. David Mascarenas (1984). It also contains foundation documents, blank charter forms, and a small group of devotional materials.
The Enrollment Records series consists of two membership registries: one provincial registry covering the years 1949–1965, and one from St. Thomas Aquinas Priory in River Forest covering 1944–1948.
The collection also includes two published items not associated with a particular series: a Holy Name Society Manual (1941) and the Proceedings of the Fourth National Convention of the Holy Name Society (1947).
The materials are primarily textual and are housed in a single collection.

Biographical / Historical
The Holy Name Society started on September 20, 1274 when Pope Gregory X issued a papal bull to a Dominican friar named John Garbella (Blessed John of Vercelli) ordering him to preach on the Holy name of God as a counter to the Albigensian heresy that rejected the divinity of Christ.
The Holy Name Confraternity has continued within the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great since its inception. The leader of the each confraternity was called the Director from 1939 to 1978. From 1978 to 2012, there was an overall Director of Confraternities that oversall all confraternities within the Province. From 2012 to the present, the position name was changed to Promoter and each confratenity was assigned to an individual friar.
