Biographical / Historical

Cross and Crown was founded in 1948 as “a quarterly magazine of spiritual theology edited by professors of the Aquinas Institute, School of Theology, and published at St. Louis by B. Herder Book Company.” It was the first periodical in its field to be published in the United States. Its stated purpose was to “provide a doctrinal basis for the life of prayer and union with God, for Christians faced with the distractions of modern life” (Aquinas Institute General Bulletin, 1963-1965, p.105).

The editorial offices of Cross and Crown were initially located at the Dominican House of Studies, River Forest, Illinois. When John James McDonald became editor in 1960, the offices moved to St. Rose Priory, Dubuque, Iowa. In 1965, the offices, along with those of Priory Press, were relocated to “Blackfriars,” at 2005 S. Ashland Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.

In 1979, Cross and Crown changed its name to Spirituality Today, under which it continued publication until 1992.

The Cross and Crown Series of Spirituality was also created by Fr. Jordan Aumann, OP to publish longer form translations and original theological works with a similar theme. The series published its last volume in 1969.
