Dominican Life/U.S. Dominican Journal Records

 Collection
Identifier: PG-1036 -.02

Scope and Contents

The Dominican Life/U.S. Dominican Journal Records document over three decades of Dominican vocational promotion and inter-provincial collaboration in the United States. The collection is divided into two main series reflecting the successive publications: Dominican Life (1957–1979) and U.S. Dominican (1980–1990). Together, these periodicals record Dominican ministry, community life, and outreach across the country.

In addition to complete runs of both journals, the collection contains administrative materials. These include correspondence from editors and contributors, documentation of the transition between Dominican Life and U.S. Dominican, financial reports and distribution records, and original letters from Fr. Charles Bouchard, O.P.

The materials highlight the Central Province’s promotion of vocations and fostering Dominican identity through publications, while also demonstrating the evolving national cooperation among the U.S. provinces in the late twentieth century.

Biographical / Historical

Dominican Life was published three times a year from 1957 to 1979 by the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great to promote vocations within the Province. The periodical featured articles, photographs, and news from ministries intended to highlight the Dominican vocation.

Upon the creation of the Southern Province and a growing desire for cooperation between provinces, the publication was rebranded as U.S. Dominican in 1980 and became a joint periodical of the U.S. Dominican provinces, though editorial responsibility remained with the Central Province. U.S. Dominican was published quarterly from 1980 to 1987, then annually from 1988 to 1990 before ceasing publication. The journal documented Dominican ministry, outreach, and members throughout the United States.
