Commission on Social Justice Records

 Collection
Identifier: PG-0481

Scope and Contents

The Commission on Social Justice Records document the work of the Commission on Social Justice within the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great from its establishment in the early 1970s through the early twenty-first century. The Commission was responsible for coordinating provincial responses to contemporary social concerns and maintaining relationships with regional, national, and international justice organizations.

The collection contains administrative and subject files as well as official meeting minutes and supporting materials. Administrative records include membership, general correspondence, annual reports, and financial records on the governance, and ongoing activities of the Commission. Subject files also include the Commission’s engagement with broader justice and peace networks, including materials from United States and Canadian chapters, international correspondence, participation in alert and advocacy networks, and newsletters. A file also includes materials relating to El Salvador, where Fr. Jim Barnett, OP served in the 1980's and 1990's, during the country's civil war.

Meeting minutes and related materials provide a record of the Commission’s deliberation and actions from 1977 through 2002. These records document policy discussions, program planning, and the Commission’s evolving response to social justice issues within the Province and the wider Church.

The collection is arranged in two series: Series I, Administrative and Subject Files, and Series II, Meeting Minutes and Materials. Materials are housed in two boxes.
