Biographical / Historical
The Dominican Trust was founded in 1988 by Neal Nix, who at the time owned several buildings in the Denver area and sought to donate the rental proceeds to support the Dominican Order’s social justice initiatives. After consultation with members of the Order, it was determined that these funds would be used to establish a grant-making foundation to support direct service organizations that furthered the Dominican mission of peace and justice.
The Trust operated under the authority of the Master of the Order and was overseen by a small board consisting of several Dominican friars of the Province of St. Albert the Great including Br. Edward Van Merrienboer and Fr. Gerald Stooky, as well as Neal Nix and his wife. Applicants could apply to one of two funds: one supporting domestic programs within the United States and another supporting international projects of the Dominican Order. Grant recipients included the Greater Chicago Legal Clinic and the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa.
After several years of operation, the Trust was dissolved in 1995 following the sale of the buildings that had provided its funding.
