Identifier: Series A

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection covers 66 subgroups, each representing a location served by friars within the Province. Each house or priory is listed under their location, while areas that they worked with through missions or stations are also listed but connected to their house of residence.

“Houses” are arranged alphabetically by the city in which they are located, each city constituting a distinct Subgroup. Within a Subgroup each foundation constitutes a distinct Series. Each Series is designated by letters in alphabetical order as needed.

Houses that do not have a Series associated with them either do not have any records associated with them or were fillial houses of other foundations. Historical information for each house is provided by Provincial Catalogus or internal historical writings.

The collection covers xx boxes.

Biographical / Historical

Dominicans were asked by Bishop Grace, O.P. to establish a church for which Bishop Grace gave the Province of St. Joseph a Bene Placitum. Following temporary arrangements, the corner stone of the Church was laid in May 1888 and a school building was cronstructed in 1890-91. A fire significantly damaged the interior of the church in 1904; the refurbished Church was rededicated in 1905. The main entrance was redesigned in 1943 and the interior renovated in 1954. The present school building was dedicated in 1936 and the school closed in 1988.

The Dominicans resided in Holy Rosary Priory from 1886 to 1995, when the priory was suppressed and the friars moved to the nearby St. Albert the Great Priory, where they resided until they left the parish.

The Dominicans left in June of 2020 and returned the Parish to the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. The Church was merged into the combined parish of St. Stephen-Holy Rosary in 2022.

Arrangement

Holy Rosary Priory originally served the Holy Rosary Parish, but after the priory closed in 1995, the nearby St. Albert the Great Priory took over. Typically, the parish’s records after suppression would then be filed under St. Albert the Great Priory. However, for consistency and ease of use, the Holy Rosary Parish records, even after the priory's closure, are kept together under the original arrangement.
